I just LOVE making something cute and useful out of garbage!!
I have’t had time to make anything for several weeks – I’ve been chomping at the bit to create. We’ve finally slowed down enough to start enjoying summer.
A while back I bought some Natural Jute (a VERY large roll), for wrapping some upcycled bottles and jars.
I’ve been trying to think of other projects to use my jute. As I pulled the last tissue out of the Kleenex box, this vision came to me. Why not? Can’t hurt to try.
I started with a tissue box, cut the top at diagonals, removed the plastic, and glued the flaps down.
Then I spread Tacky Glue on my box, and started wrapping and gluing the jute (from the bottom of the box). To finish the top edge, I cut the jute at an angle and glued down.
Voila! Here’s the box wrapped in jute.
Looked a little unfinished so I decided to make a liner. I went to my stash and found a scrap piece of a canvas drop cloth that I’d used for a previous project (yes, I save nearly everything).
I pulled the canvas over the edges of the box to decide on the length and width, and cut a rectangle to the appropriate dimensions. I centered the box on the canvas and cut squares out of each corner (bottom left photo below). Then I flipped the box over, laid the cut canvas over the box, pinned the edges together as shown bottom right, and sewed it all together.
My box is definitely looking better, but the bottom was a little too flimsy so I decided to cover it with jute too (yes I rescued the Box Top).
Here’s my finished project. Perfect storage for extra washcloths…
What have you rescued from your garbage or recycling bin?

Well aren’t you the smart one! That turned out excellent! Who would know it was a simple cardboard kleenex box! Love how you lined it too! Great job!
Thank you! I’m sure you saw in the post that the liner was an after thought – but I’m certainly pleased with the finished project!
Such a great project. I love the idea of recycling what would have otherwise been garbage. I would love for you to share this project tonight at my link party that opens at 8pm EST. Hope to see you there.

I pinned you! What an awesome idea. My hubby thinks I’m nuts because I save toilet paper rolls and oatmeal boxes, but you never know what can inspire you! Thanks for the idea.
Holly –
My husband thinks I’m nuts for saving all the junk (cool stuff) I save too. Thanks for the information about the jute at Michaels!
Tammy
BTW Michaels has a pretty good deal on jute in the jewelry dept (and a bonus, it smells like tea tree oil instead of dead nature!)
Love IT! What an awesome idea to use an old tissue box. I so want to make one for our bathroom. ;o)

So clever, and it looks like something I would buy! I need to make one. 🙂
What a cute and clever idea! I really like this! Wish there was some way to “pin” it.
Love this! It looks like a basket but it’s not and it certainly is cheap enough. I am going to do this for storage in my livingroom. Thanks for the idea!

I love it when inspiration strikes in unexpected places! A tissue box is about as unexpected as a clorox wipes container – which I spray painted oil rubbed bronze to match my bathroom and use as a small trash can – with a lid! I never would have thought of doing something with all the tissue boxes, and I need something to hold washcloths, etc.! Great work!
This is so clever!! I love that you recycled a kleenex box, it looks like such a pretty storage box now! Thanks so much for linking up, I featured you today! http://www.flamingotoes.com/2012/06/crush-of-the-week-think-pink-features-55/

Thank you!! My creativity was born with my children. My Mom is also very crafty; when I was in my 20’s I don’t think there was a crafty bone in my body – now I can’t get enough!!

This is amazing! It looks just like a basket I have at home :]
This will go perfectly in my bathroom! However I don’t have jute or fabric so I fear that I’d be spending more money upcycling something that easily recycled but I think it’s a super cute idea and I’m going to think of some ways to make this more budget friendly for myself.

Pure genius! I am at a standstill on an organization project because I need a few containers to, well contain things. These would be perfect.
I am trying this craft right now, so far so good. I just hope mine turns out as well as yours. Do you think you could do it with the tall Kleenex boxes as well?
This WILL work with the tall boxes too! I love jute & wrap all shapes & sizes of boxes, bottles, & containers with it. Good luck!! I’d love it if you’d send me pics of your finished project.
I like the valuable information you supply in your articles.
I’ll bookmark your weblog and test again here frequently. I’m relatively certain I
will be told many new stuff proper here!
Good luck for the next!
I found this on Pinterest today. It’s adorable. Thanks for the awesome picture tutorial. I can’t wait to finish up a box of Kleenex now.
Thanks!! Good luck with your project.
Is there any way to do this with plastic? Being a college student, I have received plenty of shower caddies. Thank you for the great ideas.
I’ve used the same method/materials on ice cream buckets, baby wipe containers, and jars; it works great! I’d love to see/hear about any of your projects. Good luck!!
Hi, Tammy, I’d like to include this post in a roundup next week. May I use one of your images to link back?
